Wix or Canva vs a Custom Website: When Is It Time to Switch?

A free platform is a good place to start. Signs it's time to change: you want a ranking in Google for service searches, you want a system behind the website, or you want a brand that customers trust.

An honest answer first: if your business is just starting and the budget is tight, a Wix or Canva website is enough. It's free or cheap, ready in a day, and much better than no website at all. The real question is not "which is better", but when the free platform starts holding back your business.

What do free platforms do well?

Three things. First, start speed: you can have a website this afternoon. Second, cost: RM0 to RM500 per year. Third, enough for confirmation: when people Google your business name and find something neat, that has solved the question "does this business exist". For a business whose customers all come from Instagram or word of mouth referrals, this may be enough for a long time.

Where does a free platform start holding you back?

Google search for services, not names. Searches such as "renovation contractor Shah Alam" or "subang Jaya salon" are where new customers come. To compete there, you need speed, page structure, and schema that free platforms don't give you full control over. Custom websites are built for this type of search from scratch, for example our own area page . Want to know the position of your website now? Check its speed free with Google data.

The system behind the website. Orders with reminders WhatsApp, invoices, customer records: free platforms either don't support or charge a monthly fee each, on a platform you don't control.

Confidence at a higher level. A free subdomain and the same template as thousands of other businesses seems "enough". For businesses whose customers spend thousands of ringgit, such as renovations or clinics, "enough" often loses to competitors who seem to invest in themselves.

How much difference does it really cost?

Free platform: RM0 to RM500 per year, plus fees for each additional function. Custom website at Digitalize Plus: landing page from RM1,500, full website around RM3,000, one time payment, and your code from day one. In 3 years, the difference is smaller than most people think, especially when you factor in the platform's monthly add-on fees.

So, when should you change?

The three most obvious signs: you want new customers from Google search, not just name verification. You have paid two or three monthly fees for additional functions on a free platform. Or you want a system (ordering, invoicing, automation) that works with the website, not separately from it. If none of them work, stick with the free one first, and that's our honest advice.

Can I transfer content from Wix or Canva to a custom website?

Yes. Text and pictures can all be carried over. The important thing to keep in mind when moving is the address of the old page so that the links that have spread don't die.

I have paid Wix for a year. Wait for it to finish first?

No need to wait. New websites can be built in parallel, and when ready, the domain is changed direction. Fees that have been paid are costs that have already been paid; decisions should be made on what the business needs in the future.

What platform do custom websites use?

We build on modern web technologies that are fast and SEO friendly, and the code is placed in your repository from day one. Change the developer later, work can be continued.
